Travis Tom selected as 1 of 100 Artists from Around the World for #Vaccinated campaign
    (June 2021)

    (6.20.21) FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Travis Tom, an independent designer and illustrator based in Augusta, GA, was selected as one of the 100 winning artists from around the world for the Global Open Call for the #Vaccinated campaign sponsored by Amplifier for his poster design "Save The World". Amplifier recently sponsored a Global Open Call for Art for the #Vaccinated campaign that awarded $1000 to 100 artists from around the world to create symbols that build trust in the safety and efficacy of vaccines, advocate for vaccine equity, and help combat vaccine disinformation. The call for art was requested in May of 2021.

Originally, Tom received the email notification from Amplifier around March 29 about the contest which inspired him to start sketching and digitally illustrating the world getting the vaccine shot and holding up the 'V' in his other hand. He decided to print a limited edition button/pin with "I Took My Shot-#SaveTheWorld". Not thinking about actually entering the contest he received another e-mail notice in mid May announcing the deadline-which was 2 days away. Tom decided to enter the contest and formatted the poster design with "Here's Your Shot...Take It! Save The World! #Vaccinated." Artists were asked to submit a description based on their designs.

"I designed and illustrated the world showing it got vaccinated in one arm and holding up the peace symbol in one hand also representing 'V' for vaccination. We can all play our part to save the world. I am also using a play on words as a directive to take the actual shot, but it also means 'chance'."-Travis Tom

Amplifier is a nonprofit design lab that builds art and media experiments to amplify the most important movements of our times. Our experiments are built on a foundation of free and open source art, the unlimited possibilities within a human centered design process, and the potentials when analog and digital technology merge.

Together with our social change partners in both the for profit and nonprofit worlds, we build media campaigns that shift culture and change the national narrative. We do that by drawing from our diverse portfolio of artists to commission powerful visual storytelling, then distribute it in unparalleled numbers through a creative use of media, reaching huge audiences and driving real change.

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE FROM THE SECRETARY OF STATE

Update (10.4.12) This project won another GHRAB Award for the Oral History project in which 25 people were interviewed to briefly talk about their life experiences.

The Office of Secretary of State Presents Travis N. Tom with the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Board Award for Excellence in Documenting Georgia's History

(10.4.11) Secretary of State Brian P. Kemp and Georgia Historical Records Advisory Board (GHRAB) Chair Kaye Minchew presented Travis N. Tom with the GHRAB Award for Excellence in Documenting Georgia's History during the ninth annual GHRAB Archives Awards ceremony at the Georgia Archives on Tuesday, October 4, 2011. The GHRAB awards recognize outstanding efforts in archives and records work in Georgia.

Mr. Travis N. Tom is the Curator of the exhibit "A History of Chinese Settlement in Augusta, Georgia," which debuted in May 2011 at the National Archives in Morrow, as part of the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Symposium. This exhibit, which began with discussions by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association in Augusta, documents the 19th and 20th century lives of Chinese who settled in Georgia.

The exhibit highlights the development of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, the Chinese Sunday School, founded in 1885, the history of the Augusta Canal, Chinese merchants, Chinese war veterans, and the impact of the Chinese settlement and contributions to the social, economic, and civic growth of Augusta. Through this project, a number of private collections containing records of early 20th century Chinese Americans in Georgia have been identified and preserved. This is an example of how the history of an under-documented community in Georgia can be identified and recorded through the participation of community volunteers.

GHRAB works to promote the educational use of Georgia's documentary heritage and to support efforts to improve the condition of records statewide. The Board is charged with advising the Governor, Secretary of State, and the Georgia Archives on records and policy issues. For more information, please visit HYPERLINK "http://www.GeorgiaArchives.org" www.GeorgiaArchives.org and click on GHRAB.

The Secretary of State's office offers important services to our business community, our government, and our citizens. These services include an efficient and secure election process, and the regulation of corporations, securities, and professional license holders. The Office also oversees the State Archives.
